Save Gauley Mountain Petition

Petition Targets: President-elect Barack Obama and West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III.

Sponsored by: OVEC and the Ansted Historic Preservation Council.

"We the people ask that you please stop mountaintop removal mining on Gauley Mountain. Gauley Mountain is the backbone of Fayette County, and stands in the heart of the New River Gorge tourist area. This mountain is so precious to us that its picture is on our state quarter. It plays a key role in West Virginias tourism and economy. Every mountain is special. This is why we ask that you implement a ban on mountaintop removal altogether. Our mountains are not the only ones to suffer, but also our water sources and our communities. West Virginias abundant, clean water remains a precious resource for humanity and the natural world alike. Please do not allow the continued contamination of our land and water as a result of mountaintop removal mining."
