HELP THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS

From Our Friends at WV Highlands Conservancy: Rally West Virginia is seeking a special use permit from the Forest Service to use Forest Service roads of the Monongahela National Forest for a car race. The race would take place during one of the busiest forest visitation weekends, Labor Day Weekend. Many Forest Roads would be closed to the public for the weekend-long event. Areas that would be used include Forest Service Roads on Gauley Mountain, Middle Mountain and the upper Shavers Fork area. These roads border Wilderness and backcountry areas, native brook trout streams, and they provide public access to some of the Forest's most popular recreation destinations. If you don't want screaming race cars using your National Forest as a race course, despoiling the recreation experiences of thousands, disturbing wildlife, impacting streams, shutting other users out, and setting a seriously bad precedent, please contact the forest service at the address below and let them know your concerns and demand a full environmental assessment be conducted.

Sara Schell Monongahela National Forest HC 59, Box 240 Petersburg, WV 26847 304-257-4488 sschell@fs.fed.us

Bo from Coal River Mountain Watch has set up an online petition about the proposed car races in the forest. Please sign this petition online at: http://www.petitiononline.com/fom001/petition.html
