WHAT: Safety in Mining Communities
Sludge Injection and Sludge Impoundments
Affected Citizens Tell of Slow Poisoning, Other Safety Worries;
Ask Legislators to Pass Sludge Safety Bill to Improve Safety of
Mining Communities
WHEN: Noon, Tuesday, Feb. 14
WHERE: Lower Rotunda, State Capitol (first floor, below the
dome)
WHO: Residents of Mingo, Boone and Raleigh Counties; Members
of the House of Delegates; Members of the Sludge Safety Project who
are working to extend health and safety beyond the mine gate to
mining communities.
WHY: As long as sludge safety issues remain unaddressed,
thousands of West Virginians will continue to live in danger.
VISUALS: Samples of people’s well water, which, before coal
slurry injection started, ran clear and tasted good, now black,
sometimes orange. Testimonials from people who feel that underground
injection of coal slurry has contaminated their wells and severely
compromised the health of entire communities. Photos of coal sludge
impoundments.
