October 13, 2005 Media Advisory Oct. 13, 2005 Contact: Janet Keating or Abe Mwaura at 304-522-0246
WHAT: The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition’s 16th Annual Treehuggers’ Ball
WHEN: 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday November 4, 2005
WHERE: Java Joint (location of closed Calamity Café) on the corner of Hal Greer Blvd. and 3rd Ave. in Huntington, W.Va.
WHY: Witnessing and opposing the destruction that is mountaintop removal / valley fill coal mining is hard work. The Treehuggers’ Ball is a chance for folks who care about West Virginia's future to take time out to play, while still aiding the drive to end mountaintop removal, as all proceeds from the event go to OVEC’s Stop Mountaintop Removal campaign.
DETAILS: For the first 15 years, OVEC’s annual fundraiser was held at the Calamity Café, which closed its doors in early 2005. The Java Joint opened at the same location and has graciously agreed to host the event this year.
For a five dollar donation, patrons will be treated to the sounds of area bands an musicians including Big Rock & the CandyAss Mountain Boys, Brent Senters and the Tonya Adkins. The musicians donate their time.
Items collected for the event’s traditional silent auction include a Lorraine 29-string floor-harp manufactured by Stoney End Harps and donated by OVEC member Mary Ramsey, a gift basket from La Paix Herb Farm, incense from Scent from Heaven, and gift certificate from area businesses include Java Joint and Chili Willi’s.
Collectors look forward to a Treehuggers' Ball staple, the introduction of OVEC's latest T-shirt. This year’s design features a bonsai tree drawn by Roane County artist Joseph Lung. On the T-shirt back is a quote from labor leader Andrew L. Stern, “When we work together we, the once powerless, transform each other into the powerful.”
OVEC encourages people to put up fliers for the event at workplace bulletin boards. Fliers can be downloaded from: www.ohvec.org/temp/tree_huggers_2005.pdf. ###
