Let’s Go Krogering! Card Can Be Used at Kroger Gas Stations, Too!

An executive with Kroger sent a version of this letter to the Logan and Boone County papers:

Kroger Cares is a Kroger Gift Card program that empowers our shoppers by providing a way for them, through their weekly shopping, to support any authorized (501c3) charity.

Qualified charities pre-buy Kroger Gift Cards that are then assigned to their charitable group. They, in turn, provide these unique Kroger gift cards to their supporters. Each time one of these designated gift cards is used to shop, the charity gets credit. Shoppers may add dollars onto these cards. Once the charity reaches a preset goal, they receive a percentage of their total in a check. Kroger shoppers have to designate a charity in order for their specific shopping to benefit that group.

Since 2002 over 200 charitable organizations have benefited in West Virginia...local churches, civic organizations, school teams and clubs among others.

All qualified, non-profit organizations are eligible to join. Kroger does not endorse any participant in the program, nor does Kroger engage in influencing the decisions of our customers. We’re proud of our West Virginia heritage and appreciate our loyal Kroger customers.

The nation’s largest traditional grocery chain wrote the letter in response to news reports such as the Jan. 13 Associated Press article, "Kroger ties to environmental group upset mining industry." Kroger was receiving letters from both OVEC supporters and from the industry group "Friends of Coal" – after WV Coal Association president Bill Raney sent an e-mail to people on the FOC e-list about OVEC’s Kroger Cares campaign.

Bloggers picked up the story, e-venting with some pretty scathing reflections on the coal industry’s call for people to stop shopping at Kroger as long as OVEC is part of the gift card program. The bloggers called for increased patronage at Kroger.

The publicity has really launched this fundraising campaign. If you haven’t already obtained your Kroger Cares card, print this pdf form, or just write the information on paper and send it OVEC. or call OVEC at (304) 522-0246 or e-mail vivan@ohvec.org for details. Support OVEC without adding a dime to your grocery bill. And, stand up to bullies!
