Hobet mine permit deal approved; Layoffs averted at
mountaintop-removal site on Boone-Lincoln county line
(Gov.
Manchin is trying to look like he cares about community
members here, but his meeting had no influence over what
has happened. The Corps issued the permit and
the coal company began destroying the streams
immediately--without any public comment time. The Corps and companies have made this move before--once the streams are destroyed,
the Corps no longer has jurisdiction over the waters in
question, so our legal challenge over the destroyed
streams also destroyed. However, the larger lawsuit over
the Corps illegal permitting continues, as noted in this
story. We are trying to get the Corps to protect the
public interest by giving timely notice to the public
when it issues these (illegal) permits and then allowing
a 30-day public comment period.) |
