Minings effects misrepresented (Richard Cope needs to read the Draft Environmental Impact Statement on mountaintop removal.  Mr. Cope needs to read Judge Chamber's ruling in which he describes in detail the positive, crucial ecological contributions of small, headwaters streams that are most often buried by coal operations.

Judge Chambers writes, "Headwater streams, such as those at issue here, are typically found in forested hollows, the judge wrote. The forests supply organic material critical to the stream and life within it. Trees often produce a canopy covering portions of the stream, shading the water in the summer and providing organic matter, he wrote. This organic matter is collected within the headwater streams, broken down and transported downstream where it supplied much of the energy and material which support life and other ecological functions.

The judge notes that headwater streams contain a variety of unique life forms, small bugs and aquatic creatures that break down organic material so it can feed life further downstream. When headwater streams are buried, the judge said, all of these functions are lost.

If that's too much for Mr. Cope to read, he could at least read "U.S. judge cites alarming cumulative stream loss in decision."

It would also behoove Mr. Cope to avail himself of all the information contained here.)

Logan County miners claim environmental group is out to destroy them (Rev. Robin Blakeman sent this comment to the TV station reporter: Why is it that your report allows the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (OVEC) as a group of radical villains out to "destroy" our oh-so-vibrant state economy?? Let's be honest: most of the corporate employers we are discussing are multi-national fossil fuel extractive industries - they are the true "outsiders," trying to exploit the state - economically & physically. All of the OVEC representatives I've met and talked with - since returning to this area in order to try to help save some of the mountains I love - have lived in this state for a long time, some for generations, and are only trying to get fair enforcement of environmental laws - which are NOT being enforced for the coal companies! I, for one, am VERY glad that there are groups like OVEC who are working to save our mountains, and their long-time residents from the destruction caused as radical strip mines move from one mountain, to another, to another - leveling them all, and burying steams in the process. Do we honestly want a state that is "Almost Level"? I am grieving the loss of our state identification as "Almost Heaven," or "The Mountain State." How dare we dismantle these ancient, beautiful mountains and damage the eco-system of our region forever? I'm appalled at the proverbial 'blank check' our governor & other elected officials seem to be giving to these exploitative industries, and am even further alarmed that your news service did not critically examine these issues in the report on the coal mine rally.)

An interview with UT geology professor Mike McKinney:  If we destroy the mountain, do you know how much electricity we get out of that mountain for the coal? An entire mountain provides an hour's worth of electricity for the U.S. That is insane by anybody's laws. So instead of respecting this icon of our area we grind it up, burn it for an hour's worth of electricity. And in the meantime, we've lost the most unique ecosystem east of the Mississippi. We've lost the fish, we've lost the plants, we've lost the birds--the migratory birds who breed here have no place to go. We've lost our cultural heritage, our Indian burial grounds, and shown total disrespect for nature.
