This LTE originally provided by The Charleston Gazette May 7, 2006Wind power is safe, beautiful Editor: Over the last week or so I have seen three different articles on the proposed wind turbines for Greenbrier County. What finally compelled me to write was the juxtaposition of the wind turbine article to the Perspective piece by Tara Tuckwiller on the Hominy Falls mining disaster. Id rather support an ugly wind turbine over four (or more) dead bodies any day. Which would you choose? Ah, yes, door No. 3 where energy just comes to your house without any of the messy details of producing it. When I was living in California and would drive over the Tehachapi Mountains, I was proud and awestruck at the wind turbines on those hills. Here was humanity harnessing the earths free-flowing energy. No air pollution from burning, no leveled mountains, no radioactive waste, no dammed-up river killing off the ecosystem. Although I melt at natures pristine beauty, I found those wind turbines to be beautiful. Their hum could not be heard over my car radio and the noise of my tires on the highway, so I would stop and listen to the sound of responsible energy. Katie Sawrey |
