Log, coal trucks to abide by similar weight limits under bill

By Andrew J. Beckner/Register-Herald Reporter
CHARLESTON -- Log trucks with an extra "pup" trailer would have to abide by similar weight limits imposed by the Legislature on coal trucks last year under a bill advanced by a House committee Wednesday.

During the controversial debate in 2004 over coal truck weight limits, log trucks were inadvertently left out of the final bill's formal language, officials said. Because of that, some log trucks were getting pulled over for infractions the law never addressed.

But that would change under a bill debated by the House Roads and Transportation Committee Wednesday.

"It's really a safety thing," said Nick Waybright, a lobbyist with the West Virginia Forestry Association. He said log trucks with an additional trailer -- called "pup" trailers -- are common in southern counties because they are more maneuverable on the winding hills.

The bill would limit their weight to 80,000 pounds with a 10 percent allowance. Essentially, that means some log trucks could weigh up to 88,000 pounds.

The bill passed the committee unanimously. The House Judiciary Committee is the next stop.

Delegates Ron Thompson and Sally Susman, both D-Raleigh, sit on the House Roads and Transportation Committee.
