Photo by Vivian Stockman, who was escorting a reporter from the German magazine "Der Spiegel" around the edges of a mountaintop removal site in Lincoln County when this ruffed grouse flew right in front of their vehicle. She hit the brakes to avoid hitting the bird. It landed on the banks of a stream, which has mountaintop removal encroaching upon from both sides. This bird's habitat is about gone... and the community of humans that lived along the edge of this creek is now gone, too, driven away by mountaintop removal coal mining.
