Heartwood

Heartwood is a cooperative network of grassroots groups, individuals and businesses dedicated to the health and well-being of our nation's hardwood forests and their interdependent plant, animal and human communities. Heartwood protects forests and supports community activism through advocacy, education and citizen empowerment. Heartwood's three program areas are:

  • Sustainable Communities: Heartwood is part of the global justice movement and advocates for and implements creative solutions that strengthen local economies.
  • Network Support: Heartwood provides technological and organizational assistance to grassroots organizations and connects these groups to regional and national forest protection movements.
  • Forest Watch: Heartwood monitors Forest Service activities, compels the agency to follow the law, and empowers citizen activists to successfully identify and halt destructive and illegal Forest Service activities.
