Appalachian Voices brings people together to solve the
environmental problems having the greatest impact on the central and
southern Appalachian Mountains. Our mission is to empower people to
defend our region's rich natural and cultural heritage by providing them
with tools and strategies for successful grassroots campaigns. We work
to end mountaintop removal coal mining, eliminate air pollution, and
protect and restore native forests. We also publish and distribute
75,000 free copies of each issue of our bimonthly newspaper, the
Appalachian Voice, across six states. The primary focus of our
mountaintop removal program is working with coalfi eld communities to
build a nationwide base of public support for ending mountaintop
removal. Our multi-media “Appalachian Treasures” presentation is used by
numerous organizations and individuals as an organizing tool. We also
provide legal, scientifi c, and online resources to coalfi eld
communities and partner organizations.
