If You Can Come To Huntington:
Hearing Oct. 22 and 23
This Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 22 and 23, we have another hearing
in our ongoing lawsuit over the way the Army Corps of Engineers
issues valley fill permits and how the coal industry "mitigates"
for streams lost to valley fills. The arguments on these
days will be very important to the overall case, so please join us
if you can.
The hearing (concerning valley fills Fola Coal Co. wants in Nicholas
and Clay counties) is in a
courtroom on the first floor of the Federal Courthouse, 845
Fifth Ave. in Huntington (between 8th and 9th Streets). The
hearing starts at 9:30 a.m.
each day, but we are recommending you arrive by 9
a.m. to assure yourself a seat. Please observe court room
behavior - that is, maintain a cool, calm and collected demeanor. To
enter the court house, you have to pass through security. If you
carry in a cell phone, the guards will hold it until you exit.
Please
join us in thanking our scientific experts, who have worked so hard
on behalf of the streams and mountains and the life dependent on them.
Our huge thanks go to Margaret Palmer,
Emily Bernhardt, Mark Brinson and Andy Miller.

Need to Tell 'Em: Buzz Off Changing the Buffer Zone Rule
Yup, it was another Friday afternoon bad-news-drop from the Bush
administration:
US Moves Toward New Dumping Rules For Mining Waste
Mine dumping would be eased under new rules
And from our good friend Jeff Biggers,
Speak Now Against Bush's Great Coal Giveaway
If you live in West Virginia, you may
have seen the
Alliance for Appalachia's ads (for instance, an ad was on page
A3 of the Sunday Charleston Gazette Mail) on the need for you to
take action by telling the Bush administration to buzz off changing the
buffer zone rule. Click
here for an easy way to take action.

CLEAN...Why Join?
OVEC believes that global
warming poses the gravest threat to humanity and the planet that
supports us and all our relations. Therefore, we are working with
the Civil
Society Institute
and other groups across the nation to advance energy policy that
promotes safe, clean, renewable wind and solar and other clean
energy initiatives. We can make our nation a leader on combating the
impacts of global warming. We believe that a strong citizens' voice
is needed to advance these measures. That is why we are
collaborating with CSI and other groups on
Citizens Leading
Energy Action Now.
Right now, the thing we most need you to do is help us expand our
network. Please take a moment to forward this text to at least five
friends, associates or family members, and ask them to sign the
CLEAN Call To Action today. Let them know a new energy policy is
necessary and we can no longer wait for our business leaders and
politicians to get there. It's up to us to act.
OVEC has had a hand in shaping this Call to Action and believes that
the policies proposed in the Call are essential to reduce greenhouse
gasses, to reduce global warming, and will help create a new clean,
green energy economy for our nation.
Since our government has been dragging its feet, it's time for
citizens to lead NOW. Individuals as well as organizations can sign
on to this call. Our government officials need to hear from regular
people that they should move forward quickly with this new energy
policy that promotes clean, renewable energy to preserve the planet
for the sake of our children and future generations.
The U.S., which accounts for 25% of all global warming gasses has a
responsibility to be a leader on this issue.
Please join OVEC in this important effort. And please, encourage
your friends and family members to join the
CLEAN Call to
Action, too.
