Help Save the View on the West Virginia Quarter
This Sunday, Oct. 5, please come to the Blessing of the Mountain III at 3 p.m.  Join community members on Fire Tower Mountain, near Hawks Nest State Park. Directions and details here.

Gauley Mountain as seen from Long Point in the New River Gorge in Fayette County (one of  the state's hottest tourist destinations) is depicted on the West Virginia quarter.  Will we have to reissue this quarter with a decapitation-er, depiction of a massacred mountain?

Movies About Mountaintop Removal Screening Around Nation, on TV
The work of OVEC volunteers, board members and staff, as well as that of volunteers and staff from  other regional groups, is documented in several documentaries that delve into the topic of mountaintop removal. There will be plenty of opportunities to see these films this fall. All the filmmakers have websites that encourage you to host your own screenings of the films. Host the documentaries and help educate the public about this ecocidal coal mining method that must be ended under the next administration.

If you are near Sutton, WV this weekend,  stop by the The West Virginia Filmmakers Festival to catch Rise Up! West Virginia and Burning the Future: Coal in America. For schedule details, click here.

Rise Up! and Mountain Mourning screen in Charleston, WV on Nov. 22 as part of  the West Virginia Sierra Club Coal Film Festival

Burning the Future just won the prestigious International Visual Communications Association's Clarion Award for feature films. Here's more info on the award and a listing of other awards bestowed upon the documentary. The film screens tonight at the Mill Valley Film Festival (near San Francisco) and  Oct. 11 in Pittsburgh.  On Oct. 18, OVEC organizer Maria Gunnoe, who is featured in the film, will attend a special screening hosted by Earthjustice in San Francisco at the Kabuki Theater. BTF shows on Nov. 6 in Shepherdstown, WV as part of  the American Conservation Film Festival.  Find other screenings across the U.S. here.

Another excellent film, Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America, is scheduled for broadcast on public television stations in dozens of cities across the U.S. this month as part of  National Energy Awareness Month. Click here to find local screening information. 'Kilowatt Ours" is an award-winning film that provides simple, practical, affordable solutions to America’s energy crisis and shows how we can save electricity, save money and make a difference for ourselves and the planet.

If the film is not currently scheduled in your community, you may wish to contact the viewer services department at your local public television station to find out if they are planning to show this hopeful film which inspires energy conservation and change for most people who see it.

The award-winning films Black Diamonds: Mountaintop Removal and the Fight for Coalfield Justice and Mountain Top Removal are other great films on the issue. See their websites for purchasing information and tips on how you can get involved in helping to end mountaintop removal. And check OVEC's online calendar page for upcoming screenings.

West Virginians Want Clean Energy Poll Shows; Join CLEAN
On Sept. 26, the Charleston Gazette reported "W.Va. favors alternative energy, poll shows."  OVEC joined with CLEAN (Citizens Lead for Energy Action Now) in releasing three surveys conducted by the polling firm Opinion Research Corp. We hope you've joined with CLEAN, both for their action alerts and in signing their Call to Action.  Wanting clean, green jobs, healthy communities and healthy, forested mountains isn't just some pie-in-the-sky idea. A study just released by the US Confernce of Mayors says the U.S. could generate 4.2 million new "green" jobs in the next 30 years.
