of Promise Update and Call to Action
Please join us in DC if you can, or, if you can't make DC, make some
calls. The following Call to Action is from our friends at the Pennies of Promise Campaign and
Coal River Mountain Watch:

all to Action! Help support Ed Wiley on his final leg of the Pennies of Promise Walk to Washington DC!
First of all, a great big THANK YOU to everyone who has lent their time, hard work, donations, support, well wishes and prayers for Ed Wiley during his walk to Washington DC. The Pennies of Promise campaign is pleased to announce that Ed is almost there! We are all so proud of him for standing up for the kids at Marsh Fork Elementary and the surrounding community.
On August 2, 2006, Ed Wiley set off on what would be an incredible journey through West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia, ending in Washington DC. Ed's walk ends September 13--and the Pennies of Promise campaign need your support.
Come on out to DC and meet Ed at the Lady Bird Johnson Park on September 13, 2006 at 7:30 a.m., and at 8:00 a.m. start the walk with Ed across the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Washington Monument. We will leave the Washington Monument at 12:00 p.m., and walk on to the Cannon Building for the press conference at 1 p.m. After a long time away from home, Ed will be glad to see a crowd of familiar faces for the last leg of his walk.
From the Metro:
Take the Metro to the
Arlington Cemetery Stop
on the
Blue Line. Exit the station on the south side exit. Walk east
towards DC, over the bridge into Lady Bird Johnson Park. Look for
the Pennies flag in the field to your right.
Driving: Or, you can drive into Arlington and
park at the
Arlington National Cemetery (it's $1.25/hr for the first
3 hours and $2/hr after that). From the parking lot head back
out to Memorial Dr. and take a right. Walk over the bridge
into Lady Bird Johnson Park, and look for the Pennies flag to
your right.
If you just want to meet Ed at the Washington Monument and do not
want to walk across the Arlington Memorial Bridge, (if you
decide to do this please be at the Monument at 11:30 a.m., as we
will leave for the Cannon Building at 12 p.m. in order to make the
press conference at 1 p.m.) take the Metro to the Smithsonian Stop
on the Orange or Blue Lines.

If You Can't Make
It To DC: Sept 12
Call Governor Manchin
on September 12
and ask him to please call Ed on
September 13 with good news that a new school
will be built for the kids at Marsh Fork Elementary in THEIR own
community. Governor Manchin can be reached at

Call Margaret Spellings, the U.S. Secretary of Education, (202) 401-3000. Politely ask her to make sure no child is left behind in the state of West Virginia and Marsh Fork Elementary School. Politely ask Secretary Spellings to support the Pennies of Promise campaign and to please meet with Ed Wiley. Be sure to follow-up with an e-mail to her reiterating these things. Her email is: Margaret.Spellings@ed.gov and make sure you copy her secretary Christina Wilson at Christina.Wilson@ed.gov .

Oct. 11: Public TV. Bill Moyers on America: Is God Green? Millions of evangelical Christians in America have taken on care of the environment as a moral and biblical obligation. They believe that as Christians it is their duty to oppose global warming, the loss of species, and toxic chemicals in the air, food, and the water. But many of their brothers and sisters in the faith disagree with their stance-some because the perceived imminence of the End Times and the Rapture makes stewardship unnecessary. The result? A growing family feud within a politically powerful constituency. In this program, Bill Moyers and his team of investigative journalists travel the nation talking with conservative evangelicals to examine the theological, ecological, and political implications of their debate. Watch for an examination of mountaintop removal and coal sludge problems.
Calling All Artists
A group of Huntington-based artists and OVEC members are organizing
an Art Show to benefit OVEC. The show is titled
"THE APPALACHIAN LANDSCAPE: BOB ROSS
DON'T LIVE HERE NO MORE" and will run for a week beginning Nov. 11.
Accepted artists will donate at least 30 percent of their sales to
OVEC. Please e-mail

the show.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LANDSCAPE
Some would have us see the land we call home as merely land, like an
object, something that can be divorced from who we are. But land is
never merely land. It is always shaped and formed by humans even as we
are shaped and formed by it. This is what is meant by landscape: we
coexist in an integrative intimacy and our very identity is to be found
in this coexistence. If the landscape is raped and wasted, we as a
people are also laid waste. It is also true that when adults are abused,
just like abused children, they sometimes become numbed, defensive,
confused and closed. They become dependent upon the abuse, protective of
the abuser and unable to recognize their own path toward wellness. This
narrowing and numbing of the individual is the most demonic of the many
evil consequences of colonial exploitation. The multiple perspectives
the artist might bring, the freshness of a new vision or restored image
may well be the inspiration for renewed confidence.
