Get "Mucked" in
Kermit Tonight
Join Jack
Spadaro tonight (Friday, Aug. 26) at 6:30 p.m. for a showing of
"Mucked"
at the Christian Help Center in Kermit, W.Va. In
"Mucked: Man Made Disasters - Flash Floods in the Coalfields,"
Charleston filmmaker Bob Gates documents coalfield residents'
stories of how mountaintop removal / valley fill coal mining and
virtually unregulated logging are ruining their lives. The Christian
Help Center is in
Kermit, on Rt. 52 just before the bridge that crosses over the
Tug Fork into Kentucky.
"Mucked" includes footage from the
2002 Massey valley fill disaster at Lyburn, W. Va. We doubt Bob
has had time to add footage from the
Aug. 19 valley-fill-related flood in Mingo County (this one
courtesy White Flame Energy /
Nicewonder Contracting).

SouthWings Provides Flyover,
Seeks Volunteer Pilots
Our good friends at
SouthWings
specialize in flying journalists, politicians, affected residents,
organizers and activists over environmental disasters. Southwings
has flown OVEC members and staff over mountaintop removal sites
dozens of times, and the resulting photographs, published on our
website, in newspapers, text books and magazines have allowed
hundreds of thousands--if not millions--of people to see images of
the destruction that is mountaintop removal.
SouthWings catapults the Southeast's conservation
threats into plain view. With SouthWings, mountaintop removal and other
environmental disasters are no longer largely hidden behind locked
gates. Flights are provided at no cost to non-profit conservation
organizations. To learn more, schedule a flight, or to make a donation
of your time and money, please contact
taylor@southwings.org.
Volunteer Pilots Needed: Are you or someone you
know a pilot and love to fly every chance you get? Would you like those
flight hours to benefit your community? Then consider volunteering your
skills to SouthWings and become part of the growing “conservation air
force” in the Southeast.
SouthWings volunteer pilots know first hand the impact
of viewing environmental damage from the sky. They enjoy learning about
local conservation initiatives for our forests, rivers, and air, and
love sharing that knowledge with others who can make a difference. By
volunteering with SouthWings, pilots:
· Meet and work with dedicated people in the conservation science
field,
· Educate elected officials, community leaders, the media, and others
about important issues,
· Feel good about giving back to their community, and
· Participate in exciting programs that make a real difference on the
ground.
SouthWings coordinates a ten-state network of volunteer pilots in the
Southeast to provide free flights to non-profit conservation groups,
research organizations, community leaders, the media, and others. They
have flown more than 400 organizations and this year alone have flown
many national publications, including the New York Times, the
Washington Post, Audubon magazine, E Magazine,
National Geographic, and many local papers and news organizations.
Please contact
taylor@southwings.org for information on volunteering.

Thanks for Coming
Out to the Buffer Zone Meeting; Comment until Sept. 1
Thanks so much to those of you who came out for the Stream Buffer
Zone meetings across the coalfields. And thanks to those of you who
have already made comments. Because so many of you asked, the Office
of Surface Mining did extend the comment period until Sept. 1, so
there's still time to comment. Info on who to contact and what to
say is posted
here. We will soon post photos and news coverage of the
Charleston meeting on the OVEC website's
People in Action section.
