The “Larry Gibson” of Ecuador

A Note from Teacher Jen Osha, who produced Moving Mountains

The same class that has been involved with learning about mountaintop removal is now going to be traveling with me to meet the Huoarani activists in Ecuador.  The Huoarani are natives of the Ecuadorian Amazon who have only come into contact with “civilization” in the last fifty years.  Unfortunately, most of that contact has been with the extremely destructive practices of Texaco and Shell.  After talking with Moi, the “Larry Gibson” of Ecuador, we came to the realization that both of our communities are fighting the same Big Business.  Moi invited our class to stay in his village to share stories about our struggles.  Bill Price, Larry Gibson and I were brainstorming about the best gift that we could bring to represent the mountains of West Virginia.  One suggestion was a quilt, consisting of quilt square donations by families from across the coalfields.  The message could be one of hope, faith, and brotherhood between communities across the world who are fighting to save their land and way of life.  I think that this partnership offers wonderful possibilities for everyone involved, including additional publicity and a new twist for the media.  (A lot of people seem to care more about what is going on in the Amazon than what is happening to West Virginia…media linking the two could get a new segment of the public involved.)  The more people that we can get involved, the more people can benefit from this incredible opportunity.

Please email me at jen_osha@yahoo.com with ideas about a gift, contributing to the quilt, help organizing, or donations.  Each one of us has to raise $1,700 for this two week trip (we are camping to save money, other wise it would be $3,000 per person), so please email me with fundraising ideas as well!  Thank you!
