OVEC Action Alert - January 19, 2005

New Location for J20 Event

Creatively Countering Coal's Propaganda

Mountaintop Removal in the News in England

Changed Location for Charleston Counter-Inauguration Event Tomorrow
West Virginia Patriots for Peace and other groups will host an 'Inauguration for the People' on Thursday, Jan. 20, from noon--1 p.m. at the Robert C. Byrd Federal Courthouse, 300 Virginia St. E., Charleston. If you believe the Bush administration must be vastly more mindful of the needs of the people and must take a new direction on environmental and social justice issues, then you are invited to attend this event. For more info, call 304-552-2567.

For J20, the league of Conservation Voters suggests you print signs saying “I didn’t Vote for dirty air, dirty water, or BIG Oil” flyer (for us, its Big Coal). Tape the signs in your home or car window, office, doghouse, or where ever you’d like. Remind President Bush that the environment matters!

See other J20 events and actions by checking the Jan 20 entry of the OVEC website calendar.

Creatively Countering Coal's Propaganda
Mountaintop removal promoters are really laying it on thick, bombarding the public with an increasing barrage of TV ads, print ads and billboards. Why?  Because we--all of us--are having an effect in getting the truth out! So, keep it up! Please remember to write and send letters to the editors. Click here and you will find links to websites listing contact information for almost all the newspapers in the state and country.

The president of the West Virginia Coal Association, Bill Raney, was recently on TV news, again trying to discredit "these people" (that would be people like you) by saying that mountaintop removal does not exacerbate flooding. Guess Raney hasn't read the Office of Surface Mining, US Geologic Survey and Department of Environmental Protection studies that say mountaintop removal does indeed make flooding worse. Raney's latest tirade was in response to Marshall Action for Peaceful Solutions' hosting of "Mucked" with speakers Jack Spadaro and Dave Cooper. Write your own letter to the editor to counter his, um, misunderestimations of reality.

A couple of Coal River Mountain Watch volunteers had a neat idea to help counter coal's well-funded propaganda. Bo e-mailed, "We have an idea. We don't have much time to pull this off, but maybe, with just a little effort, we can. Does anyone know someone who is going to the Super Bowl, and if so, will they work their way to a camera and hold up a sign that says "STOP MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL!"  If we know several people, that would be even better. We can send this message out to our list. Can you do the same and ask everyone on your list to do the same? If someone is found and feels antsy about doing something like this, I would very much like to talk to them on the phone." For those who are as clueless as me, Bo informs us that the Super Bowl has something to do with football. The event happens February 6 in Jacksonville, FL. Sure seems like this idea would work for any and all sporting events. NASCAR fans, get busy!

The group is taking word of mountaintop removal across the pond to Great Britain. Click here to read "They flattened this mountaintop to find coal - and created a wasteland." Please consider making a donation today to Coal River Mountain Watch. They are such a great, effective group of folks!  Contributions to CRMW are tax deductible and can be sent to P.O. Box 651, Whitesville, West Virginia 25209.

Hear from Coal River on Jan. 23: 8-10 p.m. Coal River Mountain Watch's Judy Bonds and Bo Webb will appear on Tom Spane's Free Speech Carolinas radio show. Go to www.wwcufm.com/ and click on "Listen Live" (left column) to listen live. Judy and Bo will discuss what is like to live in the shadow of mountaintop removal operations, and they'll also discuss Mountain Justice Summer.

More on the international scene: OVEC members should soon have mentions of our work to end mountaintop removal in Danish and French Canadian newspapers.  (Hint, OVEC relies on donations, too.)
