In middle of the night on Aug. 20 a
boulder careened off a road being built to a mountaintop removal
operation, crashed into a home hundreds of feet below and crushed a
sleeping toddler to death. Jeremy Davidson was only three years
old. (Click here to read
a news story about this tragedy.) Coalfield residents have long asked
authorities to insist that mining operations take far greater
precautions with blasting and the dangers of flyrock. They wish to be ignored no longer!
Please join
concerned citizens in a noon March for Change on Saturday, September
25. Meet in the park at Appalachia, Virginia and march to
Inman, Va. From
US 23 N take first Big Stone Gap exit....go LEFT at the stop sign. Go
through the next two lights, to bottom of the hill, to
intersection. Turn RIGHT and continue through the next four lights, past a car dealership, gas station,
and pizza place. Follow this road for about 3 miles to Appalachia, Va. Go
through the first
traffic light and through town. At the second
light near the town hall,
bear right across the creek
toward a grocery store.
At the intersection, turn
RIGHT...go across the railroad tracks
and across the river.
Go STRAIGHT through the
stop sign and the
park will be ahead, on
your right. Park where you can. Please arrive a little before noon.
To hear your friends and neighbors talk
about mountaintop removal, Clean Elections in West Virginia and much
more, tune in to Head On with Bob Kincaid on Newstalk Radio 620AM. Of course, you can call in (1-800-620-9967) to
have your say, too. The station is based in Beckley, but you can
listen on line, no matter where
you live. Click on the "Bob Kincaid Show" button from
8 to 10 p.m. on Monday and Wednesdays and from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday,
Thursdays and Fridays. Don't miss the Sept. 27 show, as it will
feature Greg Palast --www.gregpalast.com/.
Sometimes, I
goof up just to see if anybody is reading these things... Ok, I didn't
do it on purpose. Anyway, the flick named Kilowatt Ours features Larry Gibson, Judy Bonds and many
others. It's a thought-provoking and sobering look at the true costs
of our nation's energy appetite. But you don't leave the theatre
depressed. You leave hopeful and ready to be a part of the change we
must create. September 24: Sierra Club presents
the West Virginia premiere of Kilowatt Ours at the
South Charleston Museum's La
Belle Theater, 311 D Street
South Charleston, WV. Time to be announced--please check OVEC calendar page for
the time and directions to the theatre. This event is
co-sponsored by Friends of the Mountains member groups, including OVEC
and Coal
River Mountain Watch.
