OVEC Action Alert - August 23, 2004

Democracy Works--With Your Help!

Over 30 people have taken OVEC's voter registration training and those folks are now out registering voters. OVEC wants to register 3000 people to vote in the upcoming election, and we need your help to make this happen. Please help! Once you've been trained, we pay $6.00/hr for pre-approved canvassing, plus $2 for every registration completed (on your own time or canvassing). For more information, please contact Scott at the office, 304-522-0246. Scott can arrange a training for you!

"Mine Wars" this Saturday
August 28: 7 p.m. "Mine Wars" at LaBelle Theater, 311 D Street, South Charleston, WV. The documentary's director, Bill Richardson, will introduce both "Mine Wars" and "Feud" in this presentation sponsored by the WV Labor History Association. Free! Richardson, director of last year's "Feud" (a documentary on the Hatfields and McCoys), continues his investigation of local history with this look at the mine wars in southern WV and their influence on American life. Using rare historical footage and letters written by participants, Richardson shows a positive view of the union struggle during this era, explaining what happened at the Matewan Massacre and the Battle of Blair Mountain.

Supporting the Thoughts on America Fund
The Thoughts on America Fund supports the widest public dissemination of writing that directly and artfully engages the historic challenges of our time, and offers an alternative vision for a sane, sustainable, and peaceful existence. Through essays in Orion magazine, OrionOnline, and in book form, and in major news media, the Thoughts on America Fund brings the voices of prominent American writers to bear on issues of security and leadership in the emerging "new world order."

Following on last year's historic full-page New York Times Op-Ad by Wendell Berry, Orion asks you to support two new full-page Op-Ads, by noted writers Rick Bass and Terry Tempest Williams, which  should run in The New York Times during or around convention week. These two passionate and eloquent essays offer values-based testimony to the urgency of the times and provide a potent antidote to the often vacant rhetoric of the current electoral season. Ms. Williams article-ad (click here) mentions "the violence rendered to our souls" by mountaintop removal coal mining.
