Trainings For Our Get Out The Vote Work New York Times Graphic Cites OVEC
Democracy Works--With Your Help!
More Trainings Tonight and Aug. 17
OVEC is in the midst of a voter registration project. We need your involvement--and we can pay! Please join us for a training tonight, Friday Aug. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship, 610 6th Ave. in Huntington. After training, you can help us register voters until October 13, which is the deadline for turning in voter registrations. We'll pay $6.00/hr for pre-approved canvassing, plus $2 for every registration completed (on your own time or canvassing). For more information, please contact Abe or Scott at the office, 304-522-0246. The training will be repeated on Tuesday Aug. 17, same place, same time.
Perhaps you recall from a previous Action Alert!
or our newsletter the
troubles our Arizona Clean Election friends were having--Big Money
Special Interests were attempting to repeal Arizona's people-powered,
highly successful Clean Elections law. Good news! Late Thursday
afternoon, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that the Clean
Elections repeal initiative put forth by Big Money violated the state
constitution and was therefore thrown off the ballot.
Read about this victory here. The
victory in Arizona is good news for our Clean Election efforts here in
West Virginia.
Did you read the latest article on
mountaintop removal and campaign contributions in the New
York Times, "Friends
in the White House Come to Coal's Aid"? If you only saw the
article online, perhaps you missed the two graphics that went along
with the story. The graphic on how coal companies destroy our
mountains and streams cites OVEC as one of the information sources.
to see that graphic. The other chart, click here,
shows how the coal industry has given millions to political
candidates. It serves as a good reminder as to why our campaign
finance reform work is so important!
