Democracy Works--With Your Help! Training August 4; Work in Huntington Through October

Gutting FOIA: The Public Has A Right to Know How Decisions Are Made

Democracy Works--With Your Help! Training August 4; Work in Huntington Through October

From August until October, OVEC will hit the streets in a voter registration project. We'll head into Huntington-area neighborhoods to register voters who have historically been underrepresented at the polls--minorities, low-income folks and the unemployed.

We need your involvement--and we can pay!  Please join us on Wednesday August 4 for a training session at the Cabell County Public Library (455 9th St.), in meeting room 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (We can train you after this meeting if you can’t make the Wednesday session.)  After training, you can help us register voters until October 13, which is the deadline for turning in voter registrations.  We'll pay $6.00/hr. We are asking that you work at least one day a week, for at least three hours, between now and the election.  Can you spare a few hours a week for this important effort?

After October 13, we'll go full tilt with our GOTV (Get Out the Vote) work. This work will intensify as the election nears. We will be organizing carpools, supplying absentee ballots, running phone banks and more, with all work aimed at getting people to the polls. We will need all types of help, so please call if you would like to give any assistance. We are planning on registering 3,458 people before the election! With your support, we can get everyone we register to the polls.

If you would like to help, or if you want more information, please contact Abe or Scott at the office, 304-522-0246.

Gutting FOIA: The Public Has A Right to Know How Decisions Are Made

Ellen Smith, the editor of Mine Safety and Health News (who you may have seen on the 60 Minutes segment about Jack Spadaro) has written an important article about the Bush administration's gutting of the Freedom of Information Act. The safety of miners and coalfield residents is at stake. Read the article by clicking here.
