60 Minutes Likely To Film Our Event Tuesday

Environmental Impact Statement On Mountaintop Removal-WooHoo And Boo

GW And GW (George W. and Global Warming)

TUESDAY--BRING BACK JACK EVENT / 60 MINUTES TV NEWS

As many of you know, the CBS news show "60 Minutes" will feature a segment on whistleblower Jack Spadaro. 60 Minutes plans to film the Friends of the Mountains' kick-off event for our Bring Back Jack campaign! The campaign targets Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, and urges her to reinstate Jack as the superintendent of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy. (For background information on the Bush administration's unscrupulous treatment of Jack, a trusted public servant and coal waste impoundment expert, visit the links at the top of OVEC's home page)

Your attendance will help show the nation the extent of the grassroots support for Jack--and the extent to which the Bush administration will stoop for its coal industry pals.

PLEASE JOIN US ON TUESDAY, JAN. 13 AT 12:30 P.M. AT THE DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON POST OFFICE, AT THE CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND DICKINSON STREETS.

Please bring signs such as "I want Jack Back!" as well as letters addressed to:

Secretary Elaine Chao U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Ave., NW Washington, DC 20210

Reply to this e-mail with "Chao letter" in the subject line if you would like to see a sample letter in support of Jack. --- Speaking of the lengths to which the Bush administration will stoop for its coal industry pals. Be sure to check out our webpage's news links for Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. on the news section of OVEC's home page.  You won't believe your eyes!

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT ON MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL--WOOHOO

As of Tuesday morning (Jan. 6), the Environmental Protection Agency had received over 70,000 comments on the draft Environmental Impact Statement on Mountaintop Removal! Over 16,000 came in on Monday alone, and the comment period did not close until midnight Tuesday. Of course, not all of those comments were against mountaintop removal, but we bet most of them were. Thank you and WOO HOO on the great job we all did in getting in those comments!

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT ON MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL--BOO Just six hours after the comment period for the draft Environmental Impact Statement on Mountaintop Removal ended, the Bush administration proposed to gut the "buffer zone" rule. The current, long-standing rule is supposed to prohibit coal mining activities from disturbing or destroying flowing streams. The change Bush's coal industry friends want was suggested in the draft Environmental Impact Statement on Mountaintop Removal. The rule change is up for public comment now. We'll have more on this later. See: Charleston Gazette and Earthjustice news stories.

GW AND GW

Seems like GW (George Dubya) is doing all he can to, at the very least ignore, and at worst, promote GW (global warming, which killed far more people in 2003 and previous years than terrorist attacks): Gutting more rules that would rein in mountaintop removal, and thus promoting the burning of more coal; promoting an energy bill that all but ignores alternative energy research and development; refusing to back legislation that would increase mass transit projects and energy efficiency for vehicles and appliances; letting his "environmental" officials be wined and dined by fossil fuel executives (see news links for Jan. 7 and 8 on the OVEC website); backing only pretend, voluntary measures to reduce greenhouse gases. The list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, a major new study on global warming sees extinction for 1 million species of land plants and animals (see Jan. 8 news links on our webpage) by 2050! Some scientists are calling that an optimistic projection! All involved in the study are saying we must switch NOW to truly cleaner forms of energy.

Excerpt from Jan. 8, 2004 "Guardian" (London) in "An Unnatural Disaster": John Lanchbery, climate change campaigner for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, agreed: "This is a deeply depressing paper. President Bush risks having the biggest impact on wildlife since the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.

"At best, in 50 years, a host of wildlife will be committed to extinction because of human-induced climate change. At worst, the outcome does not bear thinking about. Drastic action to cut emissions is clearly needed by everyone, but especially the USA." -- Please help us get out the message about just one of the Bush administration's misdeeds by attending this Tuesday's event in Charleston.
