WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Dear friend and OVEC supporter, thank you for supporting OVEC and a cleaner environment in our region! We truly value your support and really need it now- more than ever!

Under the Bush Administration (which receives millions of dollars of campaign contributions from the coal industry), the assault on our beautiful mountains, streams, forests and coalfield communities continues; but we are more determined than ever to stand firm until we achieve a ban on mountain/stream massacre. For news of our latest victories and achievements on this front, please see our latest newsletter.

OVEC takes the lead on organizing efforts for Citizens for Clean Elections, an impressive, broad coalition that supports clean, publicly funded elections. This work will make political officials more accountable to the voters in West Virginia, and reduce the influence of special interest groups. In 2002, our legislators received a record-breaking $6.1 million in campaign contributions! In addition, since the 1996 election, OVEC has been one of the lead organizers of the People's Election Reform Coalition, which compiles and analyzes special interest campaign contributions to our politicians and has just released its fourth election cycle report (available on our website.)

We hope that you will continue to support OVEC's work! To donate online, visit the website and click on "donate." For snail-mail donations:

OVEC PO Box 6753 Huntington, WV 25773-6753

Yearly membership dues are $15-$30 (or give as you are able). Contributions are tax deductible. WV residents may obtain a summary of OVEC's registration and financial documents from the Secretary of State, State Capitol, Charleston, WV 25703. Registration does not imply endorsement.

CLEAN ELECTIONS ACT MOVES FORWARD

Huge thanks to all who called and wrote on the West Virginia Clean Elections Act-what is now called the Public Campaign Financing Act. When the regular legislative session starts in January, we will need your continued support. The Daily Mail editorialized against the Act, because, we think, the writer just didn't get it. See the Daily Mail Editorial. See our response here

MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE COUNTS

Some area residents have formed a new group--WV Citizens for HAVA (Help America Vote Act). The group forwarded to OVEC an important message about the issue of "black box voting" and the potential for election fraud. If you would like a copy of the message, complete with background information and suggested actions, please respond to this message with "black box" in the subject line.

To take an easy web action on this issue, visit True Majority and click on "to take action in our latest campaign click here."

MOVING MOUNTAINS CD

A CD of music about mountaintop removal, the brain-child of OVEC member Jen Osha, should be available by mid-January. The CD, which features OVEC member Kate Long, Elaine Purkey and many others, will help raise funds for the Stop Mountaintop Removal campaign. See info here and stayed tuned for CD release parties.
