TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO COMMENT ON THE EIS

Comments on the mountaintop removal Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) must be submitted by January 6, 2004. If you haven't got time to read the entire 5,000 or so pages, check out this information. Avoid the holiday rush! Please use this information--soon--to draft you own comments (much more effective than fill-in-the-fax-forms).

For links to other fact sheets and the EIS itself, please visit the OVEC website. Scroll down a little and you'll find the links.

Please ask your friends, family, neighbors and total strangers to comment too!

BY AND ON SUNDAY--SUPPORT THE CLEAN ELECTIONS ACT

A legislative subcommittee will meet to act on the WV Clean Elections Act at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 7 in the Senate Judiciary Committee room of the State Capitol. That's room W-208. We had a good showing of folks out the last time the committee discussed this bill. Please help us have a bigger turn out this time!

If you have already contacted the committee members about the Act-thank you! If you haven't, please do so by Sunday. The Clean Elections Act could help us elect more legislators who aren't beholden to Big Coal and other industries.

To get the info you will need for contacting legislators see this action alert.

ROAD SHOW ROLLING

Appalachian Voices, with West Virginia and Kentucky volunteers, has started-a couple of months ago-taking a multi-media presentation about mountaintop removal on the road. The road show informs people in other states they can help end MTR by getting their representatives to support The Clean Water Protection Act. This bill would again make certain valley fills at MTR sites illegal--remember Bush changed The Clean Water Act's definition of "fill" to legalize previously illegal valley fills.

Dave Cooper took a version of the road show to Cleveland, Ohio, among other stops. Attendees of the presentations there wrote letters and called their representative, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, to voice their concerns about the impact of this type of mining on the forests and communities of Appalachia. On October 28, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones signed to co-sponsor The Clean Water Protection Act!

If you want to help spread the word and get your own copy of the multi-media presentation, see www.appvoices.org/mtr/atreasures.asp for info. To learn more about The Clean Water Protection Act visit www.appvoices.org/action/cwpa.asp and http://webpages.charter.net/crmw/letter.htm.
