NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY ON THE "HEALTHY" FOREST INITIATIVEJoin folks nationwide on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in a Call-In Day on the so-called "Healthy Forests Restoration Act," HR 1904. This Act has a very high likelihood of being taken up by the Senate in September. It is up to us to call on our elected leaders to stand up and protect forests and to stop the reckless assault on our National Forests by the Bush Administration. In May, when the bill was before the House of Representatives, West Virginia Representative Nick Rahall called the bill "an unprecedented attack on our judicial system and the right of Americans to appeal actions by their government which they feel are unjust." Please call Senator Byrd and Senator Rockefeller on Sept. 23 and ask them to oppose HR 1904, the "Healthy Forests Restoration Act," and support a better alternative for community protection. The capitol switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Click here for talking points and more information. This action is being coordinated by www.americanlands.org. VICTORY IN KENTUCKY!Congratulations to OVEC member Ben Gramig and all the other young folks who worked to stop the University of Kentucky from mining Robinson Forest. Stay tuned, though. Kentucky Heartwood and Sierra Club Bluegrass Group inform us that UK has plans to log one-70th of this ecologically-rare forest every year. The students who led the campaign to save the forest warn that the coal reserves under the trees may well beckon to future UK presidents.
