Celebrate the 4th on the 5th on Kayford Mountain MARSH FORK HIGH SCHOOL TRIAL MONDAY Coal River Mountain Watch's Judy Bonds asks that Kanawha County residents show their support of CRMW by attending a trial Monday, June 30 at 9 a.m. at the Kanawha County Courthouse. This trial is a result of coalfield residents' lawsuit to try to keep Marsh Fork High School open. Massey Energy is probably one of the parties pushing the school board and the state to close the school. Massey has a mountaintop removal mine behind the school. As many of you have already heard, Dave Cooper has moved back to Kentucky and is no longer OVEC's organizer. Fortunately, he will continue to be involved in work to end mountaintop removal. Dave will most likely be involved in efforts to present a multimedia show about MTR to people in other states. Appalachian Voices, located in North Carolina, is spear-heading the effort to take this show on the road. CELEBRATE THE 4TH OF JULY (on the 5th) ON KAYFORD MOUNTAIN OVEC board member Larry Gibson invites you to the 14th annual Fourth of July celebration at the Stanley Heirs Park on Kayford Mountain. Things start hoping at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5th with music from the Carpenter Ants. Be sure to bring a covered dish and drinks. Enjoy good food, friends, bingo and music. You'll have a lot of fun, while learning more about mountaintop removal coal mining--Kayford Mountain is practically surrounded by MTR. Come back Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m., for a church service, gospel sing, and more good food-bring another covered dish and drinks. To get to Kayford Mountain, from Charleston take I-64 East. Pass the first toll gate and take the first exit, #79 (Sharon-Cabin Creek). Go right at the bottom of the ramp and then make an immediate left onto Cabin Creek Road. Go 7-1/2 miles to the "Y" at Leewood and take the right fork. Go 3-1/2 to 4 more miles and come to blacktop and dirt. At the left-hand corner take the one-lane bridge across the creek. Stay on this road for 1-1/2 to 2 miles and go right up the hill. Follow the guard rails to the end where you will come to a large white rock. Bear right for 1/10 mile to Stanley Heirs Park. Larry Gibson's phone number is (304) 542-1134. JUNE 23 EVENTS WELL ATTENDED, WELL-COVERED BY MEDIA Thanks to all of you who came out to our rally on June 23!
