Take Action to Stop Mountaintop Removal June 23 Memorial Service for Richard diPretoro WE WANT TO SEE YOU JUNE 23-STOP MTR PROTEST You've marked your calendar, right? Please join us Monday, June 23 at 5 p.m. (well, try to be there by 4:45 if you can!) as we gather outside the Office of Surface Mining, 1027 Virginia St. East, Charleston. While we rally here, RAIN OR SHINE, folks will also gather in Lexington, Ky. and Pittsburgh, Pa. (Charleston, WV info, Lexington, KY info or Southwestern, Pa Info). In W. Va. and Ky. we'll be exposing what mountaintop removal is doing to coalfield residents and the environment, while folks in Pa. will shine the spotlight on the devastation resulting from longwall mining. We'll unite in demanding better laws and enforcement for coalfield residents. We've got music, speakers and some surprises lined up for the Charleston rally. Fun in the face of adversity is guaranteed. As always, the protests are to be peaceful events. Hey creative types-got any ideas for a few good chants? If so, send them along in a reply to this e-mail. If you live in the coalfields and would like a free ride to the event from the Whitesville area, please call the Sierra Club's environmental justice resource coordinator Bill Price at 304-854-1179 or 304-854-1180. Call ASAP to reserve a spot on the van. If you want to help get the word out, how about leafleting in Charleston or in your community? If you want to leaflet, but want to go with someone else, reply to this e-mail, and we'll try to hook you up with a partner. You can print off your own fliers from this pdf. You can also e-mail that url to Kinko's on Washington St. in Charleston at usa0242@kinkos.com and ask them to print some copies for you. Good places to leaflet include after the Splice it Up films at 123 Summers St.-stand at the doors as people come in or leave and you have a big ready made, responsive crowd. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. only on Sunday. The Chili Cook Off by the Kanawha River on Saturday might be another good place to find crowds. RICHARD "CHICO" DIPRETORO LEAVES US We are terribly saddened to inform you that former West Virginia Highlands Conservancy administrative assistant Richard diPretoro died Sunday when an engine on a small plane he was piloting apparently failed. Three skydivers he was piloting also died in the crash, which occurred at an airport in the Pittsburgh area. Chico took many of us on flyovers of mountaintop removal sites and logging operations. He was very knowledgeable about mining and other environmental issues. We have lost a grand advocate for change. Chico's remains will be cremated. REMEMBERING CHICO-MEMORIAL SERVICE TIME CHANGE -- Memorial service arrangements for Richard "Chico" DiPretoro have been changed. Visitation among family and friends will be from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel at Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh (1599 South Dallas Ave.), followed by a service there at 2 p.m. There will be a reception afterwards at his home at 1157 Uptegraf Street in the Swissvale Park neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Homewood Cemetery is in Pittsburgh's East End, near Forbes and Murray. Take 79 to 279 into Pittsburgh, following signs for Parkway East Monroeville (there will be a detour due to tunnel repair work). Take Parkway East to Squirrel Hill Exit, take Murray Ave. to Forbes and go right for four blocks to the cemetery. Phone for directions 412-421-1822. Phone 412-371-7447 for Marina diPretoro, Chico's wife. You can sign the guest book here. Cards can be sent to: The diPretoro Family 1157 Uptegras Pittsburgh, PA 15218
