Reminder: Flyover Festival June 14 Help Spread the Word on June 23 Protest PLEASE ATTEND HEARING TOMORROW Coal River Mountain Watch's Judy Bonds ask that Kanawha County residents show their support of CRMW by attending a hearing tomorrow, Tuesday June 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kanawha County Courthouse. Folks will be asking Judge Jennifer Walker for a temporary restraining order to keep Marsh Fork High School open. Seeing people from Kanawha County might help the judge realize that this is an important issue, even to people outside Raliegh County. CRMW thinks that Massey Energy is one of the parties pushing the school board and the state to close the school. Massey has a mountaintop removal mine behind the school. REMINDER: FLYOVER FESTIVAL JUNE 14 Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is holding a free Flyover Festival at the Hazard, Ky. airport from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 14. KFTC is hosting the festival to give as many people as possible the opportunity to see mountaintop removal mining and the damage it does to our mountains, waterways and communities from the air (nothing brings home the vastness of the destruction like an aerial view). For more details, see www.kftc.org/. Please note that a van will be traveling from Whitesville, W. Va. to this event. See "Free Ride" below. SPREAD THE WORD ON JUNE 23 EVENT OVEC hopes you can help us get lots of folks out to the multi-state, multi-group action on June 23 at 5 p.m. (please come a little bit early if you can). In Charleston, we'll be out in front of the Office of Surface Mining, 1027 Virginia St., East. At the same time, folks will also be protesting mountaintop removal in Lexington, Ky. In Washington, Pa., people will be protesting longwall mining. Our unifying theme will be the need for better laws and better enforcement of existing laws to protect coalfield residents. You can help get people out to the event by inviting friends and neighbors to come along with you. As always, please remind them that this will be a peaceful demonstration. We have a flier posted to the website. You can download and print this flyer if you have Adobe Acrobat. Please hang the flyers at cooperative stores, on bulletin boards, etc. Please note that a van will be traveling from Whitesville, W. Va. to this event. See "Free Ride" below. FREE RIDES SO YOU CAN TAKE IT EASY! If you would like a free ride from Whitesville, W. Va. to the Flyover Festival on June 14 and/or the June 23 Stop Mountaintop Removal protest in Charleston, please contact Coal River Mountain Watch at 304-854-2182 ASAP. The Sierra Club will be springing for the free transportation, but CRMW needs to hear from you now if you want to reserve a space.
Thanks to the creator of www.westvirginiahills.com/mtr.html for this design. If there was a truth in "advertising" law, then this design would be a hot contender for the new West Virginia quarter. PUNK ROCKERS AGAINST MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL Fans of hardcore punk rock and metal might want to check out the new CD, "Once Unscathed and Picturesque," from the band Human Racist. Two members of the band, Chris Luten and Kris Hillen, are OVEC members. The title song, about mountaintop removal, includes samples from the "Now with Bill Moyers" PBS TV show about mountaintop removal, which aired in August 2002. The band sends along a free "Stop Mountaintop Removal!" with each $3 CD purchase. Call Chris at 304-697-3604 to get your copy. See www.angelfire.com/wv/humanracist Do you need summertime employment, have light carpentry and house painting skills, and love to work with people?
