OVEC Action Alert - March 14, 2003

April 18 (Not 17!) for OVEC Fundraiser "Final Assault"

Help Spread the Word to Stop MTR

Hear Howard Zinn Talk on Terrorism and War

DATE CHANGE: OVEC FUNDRAISER "FINAL ASSAULT" MTR PLAY NOW ON APRIL 18!

A date mentioned in the last Action Alert! has changed-the OVEC fundraiser performance of "Final Assault" is now set for Friday night, April 18, 8 p.m. at the WV State College Capitol Theatre Center, 123 Summers Street, Charleston. Tickets are $20 in advance. We are asking OVEC supporters to help us sell tickets for this event. E-mail vivian@ohvec.org for tickets to sell.

If you live out of state, or otherwise can't attend, please consider buying a "scholarship" ticket for a low-income coalfield resident who might not otherwise be able to attend on this special evening. Again, e-mail vivian@ohvec.org for details on how to get a ticket.

As noted in our last Action Alert, actor David Selby's play "Final Assault" is about an environmental activist who, along with several others, struggles to fight off a coal company's attempts to expand mountaintop-removal mining. The play runs April 10-12 and 17-19, at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets are $12 on every night, except the special fundraiser night.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD TO STOP MTR

We need your help in spreading the word to stop mountaintop removal! Appalachian Voices has created a fantastic multimedia presentation about MTR. App Voices is working with OVEC, Coal River Mountain Watch and other groups to get this roadshow on the road. We want thousands of people all over the country to have the chance to hear more about MTR and what they can do to help stop it. (One thing we will ask them to do is to ask their Representatives to support Reps. Pallone's and Shay's bipartisan bill, the Clean Water Protection Act of 2003. This bill stops Bush's change to the Clean Water Act's definition of "fill," thus stipulating that most valley fills at mountaintop removal operations are not permissible under the Act.)

We need people in key states that can help in setting up and publicizing the presentations. If you know people in Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Utah, Texas or Wisconsin who might be willing to help, please send their contact information to Nick Getzen at nick@noand.com. Contact Nick yourself if you would like to help set up roadshow events in West Virginia or elsewhere.

This roadshow is based on the campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. That campaign shaped public opinion and has kept the fierce oil lobby from (so far!) having its way in the refuge.

HOWARD ZINN

Dr. Howard Zinn, an internationally known historian and social activist, will speak on Terrorism and War at Morehead State University (Kentucky) on Monday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Duncan Recital Hall of the Baird Music Building. The address is free and open to the public. The focus will be on the foreign and domestic policy positions of the Bush administration, the balance between national security and civil liberties, and the role of citizens in a democracy. Following his address Zinn will respond to questions and comments from the audience.

Zinn wrote "A People's History of the United States," which was nominated for the National Book Award in 1981 and has gone through several editions. Zinn has published over a dozen books and hundreds of articles and essays since he wrote his first book, LaGuardia in Congress, in 1959.
