Protect Your Right To Protest—John Ashcroft in Charleston March 12 Mark Your Calendar For Treehuggers’ Ball “Final Assault” As An OVEC Fundraiser Favorite Legislative-Session-Inspired Prose Forestry Meetings You Can Attend—To Make A Difference Welcome to the new people on the OVEC Action Alert list! If you are on this list, but no longer wish to be, please reply with “remove from AA” in the subject line and accept our apologies. Sorry this AA is so long…I have tried to arrange it so you can easily scroll to the topics that most interest you. To the WV Environmental Council’s (www.wvecouncil.org) lobby team for a great job in helping to kill what would have been some truly environmentally disastrous bills during this just passed legislative session. The lobby team is as energetic and downright brave as David facing industry’s Goliath. Kudos to the team! CALL THE GOV ON OVERWEIGHT COAL TRUCKS As you know, despite the fact that the laws of physics have not changed, Governor Bob Wise is poised to sign the bill that will legalize coal trucks carrying up to 126,000 pounds. PLEASE help us flood the Governor’s office with calls asking him to VETO the coal truck weight increase bill. We don’t imagine that he will, but why not let him know he’s NOT pleasing the people. Call him toll free at 1-888-438-2731. STAND UP FOR THE CONSTITUTION--11 A.M. MARCH 12, JOHN ASHCROFT IN CHARLESTON Attorney General John Ashcroft will be in Charleston tomorrow (March 12) for a press conference and meeting at the Robert C. Byrd United States Courthouse, 300 Virginia Street, East, Charleston. The press conference is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. followed by a meeting with invited guests. The West Virginia Patriots for Peace and the Charleston Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union are calling on West Virginians to gather at the Byrd Federal Courthouse in order to request a meeting with the Attorney General. A letter expressing the concerns of West Virginians around the PATRIOT Act will be presented to the Attorney General. Benjamin Franklin once said that a nation willing to give up its liberty in exchange for its security deserved neither liberty nor security. We will gather in the spirit of Benjamin Franklin, and all who hold our Constitution in high esteem, to voice our concerns to the Attorney General about the PATRIOT Act and the Bush administration’s assault on our liberties. Supporters are asked to gather on the Virginia Street side of the Byrd Federal Courthouse at 11:00 a.m. We'd like to have as large a delegation as possible so come and bring friends. For more info, contact person Rev. Jim Lewis at ejlchas@aol.com. TREEHUGGERS’ BALL—MARK YOUR CALENDAR! OVEC hosts its 14th annual Tree Huggers' Ball on Friday, April 25, beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the Calamity Café, on the corner of Hal Greer Blvd. and 3rd Ave. in Huntington. As always, the evening fun(d) raiser includes great music, raffles of neat merchandise and services, and our brand new 2003 edition T-shirts. Please call the office at 304-522-0246 if you have items to donate or if you would like to volunteer to hang up flyers, solicit donations, etc. FINAL ASSAULT AS AN OVEC FUNDRAISER APRIL 17 "Final Assault," a play by actor David Selby (a West Virginia native) about mountaintop removal will be performed at 8 p.m. at the WV State College Capitol Theatre Complex, 123 Summers Street, Charleston. The production runs April 10-12 and 17-19. PLEASE plan to attend on April 17—this night will be a special fund raiser for OVEC. Tickets will cost more than on the other nights—but OVEC is worth it! We need to pack the house that night, so please start talking it up now with your friends and neighbors! The play is about an environmental activist who, along with several others, struggles to fight off a coal company's attempt to expand mountaintop-removal mining. This week, Senator Byrd will cast a momentous vote on whether drilling in the ARCTIC Wildlife Refuge will be included in the Budget bill. Last week, a National Academy of Science report found that current drilling in Alaska’s North Slope had caused serious harm to caribou, polar bears and other wildlife. Yet, Senator Nickles (R-OK), Chair of the Budget Committee is determined to include opening this vast sanctuary for wildlife in the FY 2004 budget. Supporters of drilling want to use the budget process, because Senate rules for debating the budget will make it extremely tough to stop this assault on one of America’s last wilderness areas. The Senate Budget Committee will be writing the budget resolution this Wednesday and Thursday, March 12-13. Last year, Senator Byrd opposed drilling in the Arctic Refuge. We need to let him know we continue supporting his leadership on this matter. Please help ASAP!! Call National Wildlife Federation’s TOLL FREE HOTLINE 1-877-703-9491 to speak directly to Byrd’s office, or to send a personalized fax to Senators Byrd’s. Byrd’s office: 202-224-3954. (Note: This is an excerpt from a longer e-mail. If you want the whole thing, request that by replying to this e-mail with “Arctic” in the subject line) FAVORITE LEGISLATIVE-SESSION-INSPIRED PROSE Go quickly, and seek diligently for honesty in state government. Behold, the winds of stupidity blow fiercely about the city of Charleston. Hordes of bought politicians do conspire against us for gain. Black water hath polluted our streams; and the floods lay waste our fields. Our houses are battered and shaken. Shall roaring behemoths also bring destruction upon our highways and bridges? Make haste, good citizens, lest we be flattened as mountains and scattered as coal dust throughout the barren land. –Donna Price of Coal River Mountain Watch FORESTRY MEETINGS YOU CAN ATTEND—TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
