Bipartisan Bill Introduced--Would Reverse Bush's MTR-Enabling Changes to Clean Water Act Coal and State Law--Keep Up the Calls More Peace Activities This Weekend PALLONE, SHAYS INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO REVERSE BUSH ADMINISTRATION DECISION ON MOUNTAINTOP REMOVALFrom their press release: U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Christopher Shays (R-CT) introduced legislation today that would prohibit the dumping of industrial waste into rivers and streams, a practice that the Bush Administration would have allowed when it made a rule change to the Clean Water Act last May. Pallone and Shay's legislation, the Clean Water Protection Act of 2003, protects the definition of 'fill material' in the Clean Water Act from being expanded to include mining wastes and other pollutants. The legislation restores the prohibition on using waste as "fill" that had been included in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' regulations since 1977. --Read the Entire press release. COAL AND STATE LAW--KEEP UP THE CALLSThe West Virginia E-Council lobby team says please keep up the calls, as per last night's alert. It's clear your phone calls are coming through! Despite this story, "Coal industry willing to consider study," the bills are still on track. Which means we will probably have to bug you with another alert soon. Find your legislators' contact info. WE NEED YOU AT E-DAY! FEB. 25Please come out to the WV Environmental Council's annual E-Day! event at the State Capitol. E-Day! is 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the upper House and Senate halls. There will be displays, speeches, citizen lobbying and award presentations. OVEC will have a table and we need volunteers to help. Strong support and attendance from OVEC members helps provide the political will for our elected officials to do the right thing for our mountains, air, water and communities. MORE PEACEWar is the ultimate social and environmental issue. War is the worst possible energy policy our nation could pursue. More Peace Feb. 15 After the Feb. 15 Pro-Peace Gathering in Spencer, which begins at 11 a.m., interested folks are invited to a meeting, which is the brainchild of a couple of peace activists in far-flung regions of the state. We will most likely gather at the Grandview Inn and Restaurant on Rt. 33 heading west out of Spencer. There are maybe 6 or 7 peace groups in West Virginia, all doing things without the other groups knowing about it. Often, our lawmakers and the media don't even know the extent of the peace movement here. Thus the idea for the meeting--with better networking, coalition building and coordination, our efforts on behalf of peace can be more effective. We can more quickly disseminate information, mobilize across the state, and demonstrate to the public, lawmakers and the media our numbers and our diversity. For those who have ideas or contacts information to share, but who can't make the meeting, please e-mails your information to vivian@ohvec.org. Your messages will then be distributed at this meeting. Please help us build this list, especially for the West Virginia groups. We've also been posting peace events we hear about in our events calendar. E-mail us with your happening.
