DEC. 10 JOIN THE DUST BUSTERS V. MASSEY

"Dust Buster" Pauline Canterberry requests your presence at the Madison Courthouse at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10 for opening statements in the town of Sylvester's lawsuit against Massey subsidiary Elk Run. For years, Sylvester residents have been trying to get Massey to stop blanketing their town in coal dust. News reports say this trial could go on for three weeks. Opening statements should be blistering!

FCC READY TO ROLL BACK LIMITS ON MEDIA CONSOLIDATION

At first blush, this may not seem to have much to do with mountaintop removal (or a host of other issues), but it does! The changes the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to enact could pummel the access we have to the Internet and the access we have to news free of corporate influence (not that there's too much of that now in mainstream media). If Bray Cary and his coal buddies get more control over the media here, you'll see less and less investigative reporting, and a lot more warm, fuzzy coal stories. Please act today for media democracy!

Also, see "Digital Robber Barons", a New York Times op-ed by Paul Krugman  to understand what as it stake in terms of your Internet access.

As always, please remember that your comments are taken more seriously if you maintain a polite tone. Please cc fair@fair.org with your correspondence to officials on this issue.

COMMENT ON THE BUSH ATTACK ON CLEAN AIR

The Bush EPA is attacking the Clean Air Act's New Source Review provision. The Bush changes will give John Amos and other toxin-spewing, old coal-fired power plants carte blanche to avoid installing modern pollution controls. The EPA says it will hold ONE public hearing, in North Carolina, IF REQUESTED, thus giving the opportunity for public comment. Below is the contact person at EPA. We need to generate calls into his office requesting public hearings, at least, in North Carolina and we should try to generate enough calls from different regions of the country asking for more hearings in other regions of the country. Please call Mr. Dave Svendsgaard at (919) 541-2380 or svendsgaard.dave@epa.gov.

He's at: Information Transfer and Program Integration Division (C339-03), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Research Triangle Park, NC 27711.

If you need more information, please contact Dan Howells, Field Director for Clear the Air at (202)778-4550 or howells@cleartheair.org

COMMENT ON THE BUSH ATTACK ON FORESTS

The National Forest Protection Alliance  asks your help in opposing the latest Bush rollback of environmental laws, which came on Thanksgiving Eve as he unveiled his proposal to dismantle the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) - a landmark law passed in 1976, which guides landscape level planning on our 155 national forests.

There's a 90-day public comment period after which the Forest Service can issue its final rules with the force of law. In order to stop this latest rollback NFPA is encouraging activists to immediately submit letters to the editor in state newspapers. If you want to receive the action alert from NFMA, please reply to this e-mail and I will forward it to you.
