UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY TO MINE UNDER ROBINSON FOREST?

The University of Kentucky apparently plans to mine under Robinson Forest, on land that it owns. UK students have asked us to ask you to please write:

Lee Todd, President 101 Gillis Building University of Kentucky Lexington KY 40506

Please ask him to oppose the university's plan to expand mining operations in Robinson Forest. Although UK uses money from this activity to fund scholarships, this operation should not expand. Mining here would adversely impact clean streams, as well as rare and diverse flora and fauna. The forest is in Perry County, Ky., near Hazard. You might tell Mr. Todd, "Please don't sacrifice Kentucky's future and one of Kentucky's greatest treasures for short-term monetary gain." Please see www.robinsonforest.org/. You may also want to visit www.uky.edu/StudentOrgs/GreenThumb/slurryhome.htm. The later web site features photos from the Great Sludge Disaster as collected by UK Green Thumb members.

COAL'S PUBLIC RELATIONS SPIN SINKS TO NEW LOWS

Exactly how stupid do coal industry hacks think the public is? Maybe they figure they've poured so much mercury into the air and so much sludge into the water that we just can't think anymore.

Have you seen the latest billboards? They show a lovely, green hilly landscape with a glowing light bulb and say: "Coal--Cleaner and Greener. Power for the People and Protection for the Environment."

Pul-eeze! Time for calls to the newspaper vent line and letters to the editor on this latest round of lies from the coal industry. What a poor attempt at linguistic detoxification of the truth. How are we going to have "greener" black lung, "greener" black water spills, and a "greener" black plague upon the land? I'm confused.  Explain to me again how MTR protects the environment?

SHE'S OFF LIKE A WILDFIRE TO WARM MINNESOTA

Bummer, dudes. Almost as soon as she finished her stint as president of WV Environmental Council, Mary Wildfire has left the state for an internship. Here's her note on what she is up to now:

I'm going to intern for six months or so with Organic Consumers Association in Little Marais, Minnesota, which is on the shore of Lake Superior not far from the Canadian border. Spending a winter in a place with a climate like that of Siberia will be an adventure, I figure. OCA has a good website, www.organicconsumers.org; it has loads of info on their areas of concern-- genetically modified and irradiated foods as well as organic agriculture and related issues. I have high hopes that I'll be able to use the skills I already have, writing and editing and public speaking, to further their agenda while also gaining practice with computer programs and organizing skills. I expect next summer to be looking for a permanent job as an organizer for some effective organization working for preservation of environmental and cultural diversity, justice and democracy-- but where? That I don't know.

Good luck, Mary!
