Bill Moyers on MTR and the Clean Water Act Friday (TOMORROW!) Night Easy Web Action on Clean Water Act / Valley Fills Help Put MTR in a Category of Its Own FRIDAY, AUGUST 2 AT 9 P.M. ON PBS TV: “NOW WITH BILL MOYERS” DIGS INTO THE COAL MINING CONTROVERSY (check local listings) >From the PBS Press Release: The daring rescue of nine coal miners in Pennsylvania this week has put the mining industry in the media spotlight. But mining looks a lot less heroic in nearby West Virginia, where industry practices are at the center of an environmental and political firestorm that reaches all the way to the White House. “The Cost of Coal,” a special report on NOW With Bill Moyers, airing Friday, August 2 at 9 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings), uncovers how mountaintop removal coal mining – which has had a devastating impact in West Virginia – may emerge as a threat to the nation’s water supply. THANK DAN—HE’S THE MAN Please, please give Dan Radmacher, the Charleston Gazette’s editorial page editor, a call of support! Please tell him how much you appreciate all his great work, how mountaintop removal and other coal issues wouldn’t get nearly the attention they deserve without all of Dan’s (and Ken Ward’s) great work. Folks, it takes guts to always stick your neck out in so public a fashion. Dan consistently speaks the truth to the coal industry’s political power, and thanks to him, and informed activists like you, that power is diminishing! Still an animal like COAL backed into a corner fights harder than ever. It must be hot, hot, hot inside Dan’s shoes. So, please call him with a “You rock! What you do is so important to us in our struggle for justice, so important for West Virginia’s future. Thank you!” Please let him know many people appreciate his efforts! Call him on his direct line 304-348-5150 or e-mail danrad@wvgazette.com. EASY WEB ACTION ON CLEAN WATER ACT / VALLEY FILLS Click here to send a note to your Representative asking her or him to support HR 4683, the Shays-Pallone Act, which would block the Bush administration’s attempt to change Clean Water Act regulations by adding a statutory definition of fill material to the Act. The definition would expressly forbid the Corps of Engineers from permitting the discharge of waste materials as "fill" to bury and destroy the nation's waters. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD--OFTEN Hey did ya notice what people power can do? Stop a bunch of overweight coal trucks for one. Legislators responded to public opinion. Let’s keep our opinions public—keep our opposition to overweight coal trucks and mountaintop removal in the public dialogue. An easy way to do this is to visit the on-line bulletin boards and “vent lines” of local newspapers. And then there are always the reliable letter-to-the editor. MTR IN A CATEGORY ALL ITS OWN—WITH YOUR HELP Appearing in “Film Nuts” column by Steve Fesenmaier in the August issue of Graffiti: Making Mountaintop Removal Official Super librarian Sandy Berman has written the Library of Congress, requesting that the subject heading “mountaintop removal” be made official. If you search WV’s libraries, or any libraries, you will not find any books, videos, or anything listed. You may find something under other headings like “strip mining.” Berman used Gates’ film “All Shaken Up” and portions of Jedediah Purdy’s book, “For Common Things”, as justification… Please write the Library of Congress saying you support creating the new subject Heading of “mountaintop removal” Tom Yee, Cataloging Policy and Support Office, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20540 (And OVEC will work to make sure that subject heading moves to the “beyond stupid, archaic practices” subject heading ASAP!) SAMPLE LETTER Tom Yee Cataloging Policy and Support Office Library of Congress Washington, DC 20540 Dear Mr. Yee: A major environmental topic, already the theme of films, articles, book chapters, and government reports, has not yet been established as an LC subject heading, meaning that access to the burgeoning material on that topic is severely hampered in library catalogs. Accordingly, I suggest the immediate creation and assignment of: Mountaintop removal mining.
