NOW with Bill Moyers to do segment on MTR and Clean Water Act PROTEST MASSEY SATURDAY! If you plan to attend the protest, please take the time to read this entire blurb for protest tips. Join us 11 a.m. Sat. July 27 as we protest Massey Energy. We'll meet in the Unitarian Universalist Church parking lot (though parking will be tight everywhere). That's at 520 Kanawha Blvd. West, on the corner of Vine and Kanawha Blvd. (Massey will have Kanawha Blvd. shut down, so don’t come that way!) From downtown Charleston, take Washington Street W., turn left on Delaware (Krogers is on Delaware) - you have to maneuver around a little to get onto the part of Virginia Street W. off which Vine Street runs. Massey is having a huge picnic, complete with carnival rides, for over 10,000 of its employees from several states. Massey has rented Charleston’s Magic Island for 11 days and is shutting down Kanawha Blvd. Only Massey employees will be allowed into the public space the company is taking over. This comes right on the heels of Massey latest examples of horribly bad corporate behavior—the Lyburn, Logan Co. valley fill / flood disaster last Friday; the INTENTIONAL release Saturday of 20,000 gallons of blackwater into a Mingo County stream, plus Massey CEO Don Blakenship’s arrogant statements in court (all this news is on our home page at www.ohvec.org or in the July news archives). We'll have a small aircraft flying a banner over the picnic: "Massey -- No Blackwater!" (This costs $250 for one and a half hours, so your donations are welcome!) We'll also get together some bottles of "Massey Blackwater" to "sell." The coal industry LOVES to say that people who criticize mining practices are against miners having jobs. So, to counter this tripe, we want to make certain we have some signs along these lines: Massey CEO Doesn't Care About Workers or WV Massey: Bad Employer, Bad Neighbor Massey: Bad for Workers; Bad for West Virginia Massey: Union Busting, Town Dusting If Massey cares for you like it cares for WV, you’re screwed! Think about ways to tie this shining example of corporation corruption with the national mood about corporate greed-heads. Other signs could include: Life near a Massey mine is no picnic! Blackwater - the Gift Massey Keeps on Giving Massey: River Killer Massey Disasters-- Coming to a River Near You! MASSey Destruction If you know anyone who has a powerboat on the Kanawha River and who may be willing to haul protestors and signs, please call the office at 304-522-0246 with info on how to contact that person. ART FOR OVEC THIS FRIDAY You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception for an exhibition of art quilts by Winter Ross at Taylor Books' Annex Gallery (226 Capitol St.) in Charleston on Thurs. July 25 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The show will run through August 26. A portion of the sales from Ross' "Earth Goddess" quilt series will benefit OVEC. The show runs through August 26. WOO HOO--COAL TRUCK VICTORY! Wow! To paraphrase Ken Hechler, how about people power! Each and every one of you rockin' people needs to pat yourself on the back for a job exceedingly well done in this "first inning" (Gov. Wise's own words) of the battle to hold the coal industry and politicians accountable to We the People! NOW WITH BILL MOYERS TO DO SEGMENT ON MTR & CLEAN WATER ACT Word is that Public TV’s national "Now with Bill Moyers" show will air a segment on MTR and the Clean Water Act on Friday Aug. 2 at 9 p.m. (Check local listings). We'll give you more information as that is confirmed.
