Overweight Coal Trucks Prayer Vigil and Web Actions Call in to Talk About a Revolution Coal: Environmental Enemy Number One Community Interfaith Prayer Service On Overweight Coal TrucksPlease attend an interfaith prayer service at 2 p.m. this Sunday, July 14, led by Reverends Jim Lewis and Jeff Allen. We’ll meet by the west entrance to the State Capitol building, at the door closest to the Governor’s capitol office. Legislators will be meeting in a special interim session in which they are expected to address the overweight coal truck issue. The legislators will hear the recommendations of the task force on overweight coal trucks, which are online here. According to an article in today’s Daily Mail: “The state has allowed coal operators to become accustomed to shipping coal in illegal loads by its lax enforcement of state weight laws, so the Legislature should increase the weight limit, the Governor's Truck Safety Work Group argues in its final report.” That’s some coal-powered, mercury-laced logic. That’s why folks want to pray—for our Legislature to get a clue as to what is just and right, as well as to ask for protection of coalfield communities. Easy Web Actions On Overweight Coal TrucksThe Charleston Gazette is polling to see if people agree with raising the maximum weight limits on coal trucks. Click here to vote. There’s another poll here. Both polls are on the left side of the page, just scroll down a little. The United Mine Workers of America have an easy way for you to contact your legislators on this issue. Scroll down to the lower left hand corner and click on “No Overweight Coal Trucks.” The Charleston Gazette recently reported that over 15,000 e-mails had been sent this way! It’s obvious what the people want…we’ll see if legislators care. The UMWA is also working on a POSTCARD CAMPAIGN to Governor Wise. The message reads: Dear Governor Wise: As a concerned citizen of West Virginia, I urge you not to support any weight increases above the current limit, and to veto any legislation that may come before you supporting a weight increase. Please do not give in to the coal operators' greed! PLEASE KEEP WEST VIRGINIA CITIZENS AND ROADS SAFE. SAY "NO" TO ANY WEIGHT INCREASES. If you would like to send one of these postcards to the governor, e-mail julie@wvcag.org with your address and we’ll fill one out for you. Talkin' 'Bout a RevolutionPeople’s Election Reform Coalition members Janet Fout and Si Galperin will be on Talk Radio (WCHS, 580 on the AM dial in the Charleston area) tomorrow, Thursday, July 11, at 4 p.m. to talk about the WV Clean Elections Act. Hope you all can tune in or call in (1-304-345-5858) with a good question or statement about why we need this in West Virginia. (Hint: See above.) Coal: Environmental Enemy Number OneThose raving, leftwing extremists are at it again, bashing coal—No! Wait! This is The Economist, a conservative business oriented magazine. The cover story is about coal, environmental enemy number one. The opening, defensive text may be a reaction to the worldwide backlash against Big Business driven globalization and the new World Wildlife Fund study that says we are using up the earth’s natural resources at warp speed. (As always, these stories are posted to the news sections of the OVEC website.) CorrectionsPlease accept my apologies for passing along incorrect information: Judge Haden was appointed by President Ford, not Reagan, as I had said in an earlier action alert. Also, in order to give our friends who do not receive e-mail a crack at naming our newsletter (currently called E-Notes), the deadline for name submissions has been extended until the end of July.
