Wanted: Save Blackwater Canyon Organizer


13TH ANNUAL INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION ON KAYFORD MOUNTAIN On Saturday July 6, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday July 7, beginning at 12:30 p.m., come to Kayford Mountain, a green island surrounded by a moonscape of mountaintop removal. Learn more about MTR while listening to music provided by Charleston’s Carpenter Ants, Sang Run Celtic Band, Todd Burge, Virginia Rachel, Jason Lewis, Josh Sheridan, Robby Torres, Bill Hudson, Jimmy Clinton, Cherylann Hawk, Keith and Joan Pitzer, plus Gospel Singing on Sunday.

Please bring a covered dish and drinks to share. For more information, call Larry Gibson at 304-542-1134.

Folks from Coal River Mountain Watch will be up on Kayford Mountain with postcards addressed to the Governor regarding the OVERWEIGHT COAL TRUCK ISSUE. Please be sure to sign one of these postcards. (You can keep up to date on the coal truck issue by checking the news sections of the OVEC website.)

DIRECTIONS TO KAYFORD MOUNTAIN *From the State Capitol take I-64 East. Pass the first tollgate and take the first exit, #79 (Sharon-Cabin Creek). Go right at the bottom of the ramp and then make an immediate left onto Cabin Creek Road. Go 7-1/2 miles to the “Y” at Leewood and take the right fork. Go 3-1/2 to 4 more miles and come to blacktop and dirt. At left-hand corner take the one-lane bridge across the creek. Stay on this road for 1-1/2 to 2 miles and go right up the hill. Follow the guardrails to the end, where you will come to a large white rock. Bear right for 1/10 mile to Stanley Heirs Park.

WANTED: SAVE BLACKWATER CANYON ORGANIZER Put your strong people and communication skills to use as a Grassroots Organizer/Outreach Coordinator to help Save Blackwater Canyon. Job responsibilities include recruiting volunteers by phone and email, organizing volunteer events, working with statewide media to promote events and preservation activities. Position is for 30-40 hours per week, $7 to $12 per hour commensurate with experience. Ideal candidate would have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Access and live in, or be willing to relocate to, Charleston, WV.
