Free Home Cooked Food!  (June 13 Stop MTR Meeting Reminder) Hey all you super Stop MTR activists—you deserve a home cooked meal before our next meeting! Two good cookin' volunteers have offered to fix the fixin's, including homemade bread, ratatouille and vegetarian lasagna. All we need to know is: How much food to cook--Are you coming to the meeting? Let us know ASAP by e-mailing dave@ohvec.org or vivian@ohvec.org. (Thanks to those of you who have already registered.) Or call Dave at 304-522-0246.

The June 13 dinner is at 6 p.m. sharp, discussion at 7 p.m. sharp at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 501 Elizabeth St., Charleston, WV (just down the street from Empty Glass). We'll brainstorm and discuss our post-Haden-decision strategy to end mountaintop removal.

DC Trip Wrap-up  Wow! What a day we had in DC on June 6, 2002. I could blather on about how fantastic the Congressional Hearing and our press conference on valley fills were, but see and hear for yourself. On our home page, www.ohvec.org, you can check out the massive press coverage on June 6 and June 7. Please also visit the People In Action photo gallery of the event. We have pictures of the event, a link to follow to view the entire Congressional Hearing, and links to people’s Hearing testimony and press conference statements.

Name The Newsletter Contest  We've been getting some great suggestions for changing the name of our printed newsletter, which is now called "E-Notes." Keep 'em coming! Please send your suggestions to vivian@ohvec.org by the end of June. If we choose your entry as our new name, you'll win an OVEC 2002 Treehuggers’ Ball T-shirt. The T-shirt features artwork by Joe Lung and a quote from Laura Forman. If we have multiple entries for the same wining newsletter name, the first person to submit that name will be the winner. Good luck!

Still Time To Write On Valley Fills  If you haven’t yet sent in your comments for the Congressional Hearing record on the Bush administration’s change to the Clean Water Act’s definition of "fill," there is still time—the deadline for comments to be submitted for inclusion in the written record is June 19.

Address your comments to:

Senator Joseph Lieberman, Chair Subcommittee on Clean Air, Wetlands and Climate Change Environment and Public Works Committee United States Senate Washington, DC 20510

Be a note like this: Please add my comments to the Congressional Hearing record on the Bush administration’s change to the Clean Water Act’s definition of "fill."

Since snail mail is suspect these days, it is best to fax your comments to 1-202-224-1273 by June 19. You can also e-mail comments to Jo-Ellen_Darcy@epw.senate.gov and Margaret_Wetherald@epw.senate.gov

E-mail vivian@ohvec.org if you'd like to see a couple of sample letters to help you compose your own letter.

Thank Judge Haden Please  Take a moment to thank Judge Haden for his courage in upholding the Clean Water Act by blocking the Army Corps of Engineers from permitting most valley fills at mountaintop removal operations. If you need background information to help write your letter, see Ken Ward’s article "Judge blocks new valley fills".

You can e-mail Judge Haden at Judge_Haden@wvsd.uscourts.gov

Or send a note to: Chief U.S. District Judge Charles H. Haden II Southern District of West Virginia 300 Virginia St. Charleston, WV 25301
