ROAD TRIP! Come with us to DC to tell Bush and Co. what you think about their attempts to make it even easier for mountaintop removal operators to bury streams with rubble – rubble that used to be our mountains. Plans include lobbying on Capitol Hill, probably a press conference, and more. West Virginia and national environmental groups are working together on this road trip. (See below for background info on why we need to make our presence felt in DC.) TENTATIVE DATE IS MAY 14 Please let us know if you are ready to go to DC on the afternoon of Tuesday May 14, via a bus leaving Charleston (probably at 3 p.m.) Last time we went to DC, we were able to pick up folks along Route 79 as we headed north, and we may be able to do this again. We’ll stay overnight in DC, and then spend Wednesday, May 15 making the rounds on Capitol Hill. We’ll leave that evening for home. At the moment, this date is tentative, but we need to get an idea of how many folks are ready to make the trip. Our goal is to get funding so no one HAS to pay to go on the trip. If you can make a donation specifically for this trip (whether you can make the trip or not!), please do, but please do not stay away if you can’t! If you think you can make the trip, please call the OVEC office at 304-522-0246, or e-mail dave@ohvec.org. Dave Cooper, our new organizer, starts May 1. Looks like he’ll be getting off to a grand start. Be sure to give us your name and a phone number where we can reach you. (Please don’t respond to vivian@ohvec.org, as I’ll be gone for a week.) Background info on what is happening with valley fills—why we need to make the trip: Gazette, Gazette, NY Times, Tom Paine More info and articles accessible from our home page. |
