Wrap-Up from last Valley Fill Call-In Day

Mountaintop Removal (MTR) Calendar Items

Other Calendar Items

Job Opening with WV Rivers Coalition

Valley Fill Call-In Day Wrapup  The second national Call-In Day was another success. The EPA reported to national groups that calls came in all day long. EPA administrator Christine Whitman is apparently getting a briefing on the definition of "fill" issue next week, a sign that we got her attention! There's a "Green Group CEO" meeting scheduled with Whitman for the end of April and folks in that meeting intend to get the definition of "fill" on the agenda. Thanks all for your efforts!

This is the DEIS that came out of the major MTR lawsuit for the largest ever proposed MTR operation. WV Highlands Conservancy, WV Rivers Coalition, OVEC and others will be coming up with comments on this monster report, which we will share with you. OVEC will organize carpools to the hearing.

Written comments on the DEIS may be submitted until May 14 to: US Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District ATTN: CELRH_OR_FS Public Notice No. 199800436-2 502 Eighth Street Huntington, Wets Virginia 25701-2070

Job opening with WV Rivers Coalition  (Many of you know WVRC powerhouse Nathan Fetty. Nathan is leaving Rivers for law school and we wish him well, though we'll REALLY miss "Boy Wonder.")

The West Virginia Rivers Coalition (WVRC) seeks an ambitious and motivated Issues Coordinator for our Elkins, West Virginia office to coordinate and implement WVRC’s River Issues advocacy program. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a benefits package.

As the lead issues person on staff, the Issues Coordinator is responsible for advocating, researching and commenting on state and federal policy and representing WVRC on environmental issues. This includes making presentations before state Boards, testifying at public hearings, organizing comments and issue participation by West Virginia’s environmental and watershed communities, and being the primary contact for those with questions or concerns on environmental activity across the state.

WVRC is a statewide river conservation organization staffed with six energetic professionals whose mission is to "seek the conservation and restoration of West Virginia's exceptional rivers and streams." In 2002 we are concentrating on four major areas: (1) Implementation of the Clean Water Act in West Virginia, (2) The Headwaters of the Potomac River (3) Education and training for local, grassroots watershed organizations, and (4) Coal. We have over 2,800 individual members and 48 local, state, regional and national affiliate organizations.

As the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest, Elkins, West Virginia is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, artists and musicians. As the Randolph County seat, this attractive mountain town is also the home of Davis and Elkins College, Davis Memorial Regional Hospital, and numerous B&B’s. It also boats the six-week Augusta Music and Arts Festival and the Mountain State Forest Festival. Native trout streams and unparalleled boating and hiking are accessible from your back door.

Come and enjoy life in wild and wonderful West Virginia and help protect our rivers and streams while you’re at it!
