We need your help for Treehuggers' Ball WV Campaign Finance Reform - Call Now!: Let's get the legislature moving! If you are tired of the overwhelming big special interest influence in the West Virginia legislature and would like to see a new, constitutional system that would help reduce the access and influence of big money on "our" politicians, now is the time to contact your Senator. Tell them that you want an interim study of the West Virginia Clean Elections Act and to vote Senate Concurrent Resolution 42 (S-CR-42) out of the Senate Rules Committee and put it to a vote on the Senate floor! Members of that committee who need to receive phone calls to get this resolution to a floor vote are: Sen. Earl Ray Tomblin, Sen. Leonard Anderson, Sen. Edwin J. Bowman, Sen. H. Truman Chafin, Sen. Oshel Craigo, Sen. Lloyd Jackson, Sen. Bill Sharp, Sen. Bill Wooten, Sen. Sarah Minear, and Sen. Vic Sprouse. The toll free number to call to leave a legislator a message is: 1-877-565-3447. Artic National Wildlife Refuge Endangered Species Act: URGENT ACTION ALERT: Call Representative Rahall in support of the Endangered Species Act! Anti-ESA Representative Jim Hansen has decided that his retirement goal (he will not be seeking another term in the House) is to "reform" the Endangered Species Act. Rep. Hansen has been a constant foe of the ESA throughout his years in Congress and is now the Chairman of the House Resources Committee with jurisdiction over the ESA. Utilizing two recent controversies involving agency science and the ESA, Rep. Hansen has scheduled two hearings to grandstand about how the ESA is "broken." However, both examples he will use do not actually show that the ESA is broken, it is not. More information (from our On Top of the Hill publication) is below. It is critically important that members of the Resources Committee (especially Rep Rahall, the ranking Democrat) hear from constituents in their districts and home states in support of the Endangered Species Act. We need champions of environmental issues to stand-up for the ESA at these hearings in order to illustrate support for the ESA. The public supports the Act and we do not need it to be undermined by the political agenda of a retiring member of Congress. ACTION: Please call Representative Rahall (202) 225-3452 with this general message: "I am calling today to urge you to stand-up for the ESA in the hearings in the House Resources committee on the lynx and the Klamath controversy. Anti-ESA forces are using these examples to say that the ESA is broken. It is not broken and I fully support the Endangered Species Act. Please be a vocal supporter during these hearings." Representative Rahall is the only Member of Congress from West Virginia on the Resources Committee. For these purposes, we should urge him to represent the views of all West Virginians. If you have any other questions or need more information, please do not hesitate to call or email. Thank you so much for your help in this urgent matter. |
